I'm wondering if "hit the mother lode" could be used in my sentence. Have I made any mistakes?

The first time the music producer Richard Fox heard Diana sing, he knew that he had hit the mother lode. She was a tiny woman but her voice was so powerful that it gave Richard goosebumps. Diana had a natural gift that was impossible to teach, and he couldn't hide his joy that it was he who first got a chance to discover it.

No mistakes.

How about that he was the first?
