I wrote this:

...when I suddenly received a call from my boss. He told me that a position had become available in the marketing department and that he'd thought/been thinking of me. He said he was very happy with the work I was/I'd been doing for the company, so if I was interested, the job was mine.

Could anyone please tell me which tense you'd find natural to use in the two bold-faced places here?
 
I'd use "he'd thought" and "I'd been doing".

I'd remove "suddenly". Phone calls aren't sudden. Your phone rings. That's it!
