[My sentences]

a. He wore a black coat.

b. He was wearing a black coat.

c.
He wears a black coat.
---
Sentence (a) could mean that he had a habit of wearing a black coat or that he was wearing a black coat at the time, while sentence (b) can only mean that he was wearing a black coat at the time.

Sentence (c) means that he has a habit of wearing a black coat.

Are these right?
