The use of prepositions in English is often idiomatic. You just need to take note of what is natural and what is not.

I'm not sure what needs to be explained. Are you asking about across the room? (I assume you know the meaning of through.)

across the room means on the other side of the room
across the road means on the other side of the road
across the sea means on the other side of the sea

I disagree that use of prepositions is often idiomatic, although it's certainly true in some cases.
