Hello Teacher, can I use either "he says" or "he said" in this sentence

I called Mary today to remind her regarding her appointment and she says she is not doing very well.

I called Mary today to remind her regarding her appointment and she said she is not doing very well.

"She says" or "she said" are both OK.

I called Mary today to remind her regarding her appointment and she said she is not doing very well.

***** NOT A TEACHER *****

As Soothing Dave said, both of your sentences are used by native speakers.

May I most respectfully and gently make a suggestion: if you decide to use the second sentence, it might be helpful to be consistent

and use the past tense throughout. That is:

I called Mary today to remind her regarding her appointment, and she said (that) she was not doing very well.

HAVE A NICE DAY!

I'm not sure I agree. If "not doing well" is talking about someone feeling ill, then the condition probably continues into the present, so "is not doing well" seems right to me.

Both 'was' and 'is' are fine in this sentence.

But with she says, only is works.
