1) He had a suit to wear on official occasions.
2) He bought a suit to wear on official occasions.

3) He had a suit for wearing on official occasions.
4) He bought a suit for wearing on official occasions.

Are all of these sentences correct?

In '1' and '2' can we tell if he had/bought only one suit or maybe more?
Maybe he had/bought a suit that was for official occasions and he had/bought some other suits that were not suitable for official occasions.

I think 'to wear of official occasions' could be adjectival or adverbial.

All four are grammatical. To my ear 3 and 4 seem a little less natural than 1 and 2.

In 1, he might have already owned other suits to use for occasions other than official ones. It would not occur to me to imagine he bought more than one suit at the same time.

I can't sort out adjectival from adverbial.

They would be used in different contexts. With #1 you're probably describing somebody's wardrobe. With #2 you're probably talking about a time he went shopping.
