"Having never received formal training as a designer, Gaultier started out only with his strong will and natural talent."

Can I replace the underlined part with "Never having received"? If so, which one is better?

Also, in a different context, which one is better? (1) She reported having never received formal education. or (2) She reported never having received formal education.

They are both fine.

I much prefer "Never having received..." myself.
