Hi folks,

Could someone explain to me how I should interpret grammatically the underlined part of the following excerpt from the Bible?

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

"That" is a conjunction here to introduce the clause.
"A" is an article, an adjective describing "man."
"Man" is a noun, the subject of the clause.
"Lay" is a verb, the predicate of the clause.
"Down" is an adverb, describing how the "lay" is done. (Or alternatively, "lay down" is a "phrasal verb.")
"His" is an adjective describing "life."
"Life" is a direct object of the verb "lay." It is what is being laid.
"For his friends" is a prepositional phrase acting as an adverb to describe the laying.

I somehow took the "that" as a relative pronoun. That's why I couldn't figure out how I should interpret it grammatically.
