I have never heard this idiom. Is it commonly used in BrE?

Not in the south.

@probus: Is this idiom ever used in Canada?

No. I've never encountered it.

It used to be common here in Lancashire, NW England, but I’ve not heard it for a long time.

I've heard it in the Midlands. I don't know who added it.

@Tdol - Where are you finding the additions? I often have a problem with the titles of the new additions. Many of the titles seem awkward and unnatural to me. ;)

I think @Tdol was referring to UE's own idioms dictionary. Only staff are permitted to add to it, but apparently no record is kept of who makes changes. Only a guess on my part.

It's here. The contributor is given as Carol gladwin

It's here. I wouldn't put much stock in what Carol contributes! She can't even spell her last name correctly!

@Tdol I'm baffled. Could you give an example of its usage?

@Amigos4 I don't want to shoot him. I just don't understand that one.
🤔
