go in/up for one's examination

I'm not sure I'd use "going in" unless I was actually watching her enter the hall in order to take the exam. If I wanted to say that she was applying to take the exam, I'd say "She's putting [herself] in for the ... exam".

Why say "going in for (phrasal verb) an exam" when you can say "taking an exam"?
