[Grammar] Forget/Forgot/is forgetting

I would like to sort out all forms of FORGET.

I have looked through some threads but haven't found a summary.

Some suggested that 1) I forget you name. (= I don't remember your name)
while 2) I forgot your name. (= I don't know it now, but I used to know it).

I don't see a big differnce between them.

Another one is 3) to be forgetting

what meanings does it have except I almost forgot?

Just as appropriate is: "I've forgotten your name."

2) I forgot your name.

I would use this only with reference to a past forgetting: "I forgot your name last time we met, but I've remembered it this time."

I don't think it is used in that way. I would use it as a recent, possibly temporary, thing: "I must be getting old - I'm forgetting to do all sorts of things these days."

I think it should have two meanings at least

1) "I've forgotten your name."
2) I forget your name (every time I am asked about it)

How so?

I am forgetting my hat. -:-? I know I am forgetting something. Oh, I almost forgot my hat!:shock:
