Would you please correct my mistakes in the following sentences?

For the sake of conversation, John asked his fellow passenger where he was travelling to. The man said he was going to Bath, to his daughter's wedding.
 
Your sentence is understandable, but I'd start 'To make conversation,...' or 'Wanting/Deciding to start a conversation,...'
