[General] flat broke / meltdown

Dear teachers,

Would you be kind enough to tell me whether I am right with my interpretation of the expressions in bold in the following sentence?

Some were flat broke and desperate, some were stressed to the max and at their wits' end, some were on the verge of complete meltdown.

flat broke = stone-broke = completely broke; having no money; penniless

meltdown = financial collapse, bankruptcy or loss of self- as in: on the point of a psychotic meltdown

In my opinion the proper meaning in the present case is the latter one from both above..

Likewise, great understanding of meanings. Meltdown could suggest both financial and mental or emotional meltdown, possibly as a consequence of falling into bankruptcy.
