One of my friends asked me what word would be the best for the blank. I said I would have filled the blank with 'when', referring to 'last year', but he said his son's teacher said the given answer was 'whose'. And the father and son felt confused too. Could you please explain which word should be used in the blank?

BW Kafe is an unusual-looking cafe in Moscow and Sankt Petersburg which looks like the setting of A-ha's famous "Take on Me" video. BW Kafe first made international headlines last year, __________ photos of the Sankt Petersburg branch became popular online. Designed by Russian artist Anfisa Toshina, the inside part of the cafe looks like a picture drawn with charcoal on a piece of white paper, creating the false impression that you are the only 3 D "obiect" in a two-dimensional(二维)world. It's a pretty nice trick, the one that might seem strangely familiar if you have been on the Internet sometime in the last two years.

It's simple. Use "when" there. (I don't know what "whose" would refer to.)

'Whose' is incorrect in that position.
