For nearly three hundred years, the Iluminados freehold had remained the dominant power in the continent of Europe. Thanks to their wit and advanced weapons for the time, they were able to tame The Hydra, a mighty beast that was key to their power. At their height, the Illuminados ruled most of Europe - from Finland to Bulgaria- constituting about half of the known world at that time. However, one fateful day seven centuries ago, a cataclysm - which became known in later years simply as "the Destruction" - laid waste to the freehold, its people, and the surrounding lands. The string of volcanos near Poland exploded in a massive eruption, consuming the territory of the Illuminados in ash and flame. The entire region was then wracked by corresponding earthquakes. The west coast was shattered and the ocean came sweeping in, becoming the area now known as the flooded ruins. No sailor dares to cross it since it is deemed as perilous as the Bermuda Triangle. The exact cause of the decimation remains unknown - some believe the volcanic eruption was a natural disaster, while others believe it was inadvertently triggered by the Illuminados' sorcery. Whatever the cause, every town, city and landmark was annihilated. The Hydra and other mighty creatures were lost as well, along with the Illuminados' recorded history, spells, and knowledge. With the heartland of the freehold destroyed, its surviving colonies to the west and east declared their independence, politically fracturing the continent and initiating a series of savage wars for dominance.

That actually makes sense. I can think of a continent as a massive island.
