Do we need the definite article when talking about the "farewell to (the) school (leaving school)" as a phase in our lives? I think there should be no article here as school is regarded as an institution, not a building, but I am not absolutely sure. And is it OK to use this expression in a newspaper article?

It's possible in a newspaper article. No article is required.
