I am wondering which noun "where" modifies.

Can I take it to mean:

(Out to a place) far away from land where the sea is deepest.

Here, "where" modifies "a place".

What do you think?

Yes, that makes sense.

That's not a noun phrase, it's an adjective phrase.

I think kadioguy's way of understanding is sound.
