Children's story series, "Jennings" by Anthony Buckeridge from the 1950s/60s includes this episode. The boys in the boarding school, where everyone is called by their surnames, are rehearsing a play. Darbishire has written it, and discovers that getting his friends to try it out is not as easy as he thought.
