Some schools have some extra classes for those students with low grades. Are those extra classes called "power"?

Not in AmE. I would call them "remedial".

Nor in BrE. 'Remedial' is sometimes used.

What makes you think they're called 'power', OD?

A Saudi student asked me what it is called in the English language. He said that, "when I took some English courses in Canada, they used to call them "power". He is not yet sure.

I don't think I've actually heard the phrase 'power class', at least in this context. It does sound odd.

The phrase 'power class' sounds to me like some kind of advanced class or short term intensive study class, such as a cram class

Those would sort of be the opposite of the remedial class situation you describe.

The purpose of power classes is to enrich the content for the excellent students. For example, the students who have done very well in English are offered the chance to take Power English instead of ordinary English.
