Thanks to the money I won in the lottery , I can extend my stay here for/by as long as I wish.

Which preposition is correct here?

A stay is extended for a period of time by someone.

For me, "for" is the only one that works in the original sentence because it's followed by "as long as I wish". However, if that were replaced by a specific time frame, "by" would also be possible.

Thanks to my lottery win, I can extend my stay by two weeks.

I'm surprised that other members consider for correct there. The correct word is by.

You extend something by + period of time.

I can extend my stay by two weeks. :tick:
I can extend my stay for two weeks
. :cross:

In the OP sentence, as long as I wish is filling the 'period of time' slot.

I think I agree though that as long as I wish is causing problems here, so I'd suggest replacing it with however long I want.

I have no problem with I can extend my stay here for as long as I wish

In a physical dictionary, I found this sentence...
Can you extend your visit for a few days more?

Shall I presume that the word more is what makes the difference here? So we say...
Extend my visit/stay by a few days/weeks etc
Extend my visit for a few more days/weeks etc

Correct me if I got it wrong somewhere.
