Hi,

Can "excessive" be used as an adjective for words like "number", meaning 'more than usual', or 'too many'? If not, then how can it be put to suggest the same point?

It certainly works for too many. (Most people most of the time would simply say too many.)

You will also see the plural- excessive numbers of tourists are ruining some cities, etc.

Thanks for all useful replies.

Is there any other common word (adjective) meaning the same as "excessive" in the context given above?

How about:

high
unexpectedly high
overwhelming
deluge (without number of)
flood
Influx

The last three of those are not adjectives. Deluge/flood/influx of visitors work, but they are nouns here.
