Does the bold text sound natural? And if it does not what verb would suit the sentence?


"Though the home side won hands down in the first leg the manager tried to abate the enthusiasm:"You know what they say, do not count your chicken before they are hatched; we have not moved up to the next stage of the competition yet."

It's not wrong, but I would probably use 'curb'. He doesn't want to put a damper on their enthusiasm, just keep it in check.

It should be 'chickens' by the way.

It sounds dated to me. Roman's version works better for me, or simple something like to calm things down/keep a lid on things/stop over-excitement.
