As far as I know the main difference between enquiry and inquiry is that the first one is BrE whereas the latter is AmE.

My question is a bit more detailed. I have an example which I am not certain about.

Rental enquiry or rental request

Which one is used more often in a subject heading of a letter? Or is there even a better suggestion than those two?

Thank you for your help!

For me, an enquiry and a request are different things.

Rental enquiry: "Can you tell me if the apartment is available to rent for the whole of October?"
Rental request: "I would like to book the apartment for the whole of October."

We use both in BrE- an enquiry is small, like asking the price of something, and an inquiry is a detailed investigation.
