Hi

Does the word "endurance" mean also "tolerance"?

Hi

Does the word "endurance" mean also "tolerance"?

Not really, no. In some circumstances we might say "I can endure X" to mean the same as "I can tolerate X", but in general they don't mean the same.

So, how about this sentence:

Endurance and kindness are taught in this technique (technique of meditation) towards all humans as well as other things.

I think the author meant "tolerance"?

Yes, "tolerance" is the right word.

I agree that if both the things at the beginning of the sentence are connected to the end of the sentence, then it should have been tolerance. If it means:

"In this technique, endurance towards all humans and other things and kindness towards all humans and other things are taught" then it should be tolerance.

However, it could mean that the technique teaches two things:

- Endurance
- Kindness towards all humans as well as kindness towards other things.

In fact, it could mean that the technique teaches more than two things:

- Endurance
- Kindness towards all humans
- Some other things!

So in your opinion it's possible that the word "endurance" is correct here?

I think it's possible, yes, if "endurance" on its own is one of the things taught in this technique.

If the technique teaches how to sit in meditation for 6 continuous hours, or how to keep it up daily for 6 years, then it teaches endurance.
If you've read about the technique, you should know whether it teaches any sort of endurance or not.
