is there any verb that means "to make something more efficient"?

Will "improve" do?

How about "rationalize", especially when talking about a process or a procedure?

How about expedite?

i was thinking more along the lines of something like "effectivize" but there were only 276 pages in google that had that term so i don't think it is an actual word.

after reading your suggestions i also thought of "optimize" too. great suggestions, thanks a lot! you guys/gals were quick!
