Does this sentence sound natural "This document assumes that you are already familiar with the..." ?

This document assumes that you are already familiar with the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and that you have a basic knowledge of English phonetics.
 
I find it a bit strange. Why? A document can't assume anything. Also, either you are familiar with IPA or you are not. (I'm not.)
 
It's fine, but you also sometimes see the same idea expressed without the personal pronouns.

This document assumes familiarity with the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and a basic knowledge of English phonetics.


It's not necessarily any better, just another way to express the same idea.
 
Or

This document assumes the reader to be familiar with the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and possesses a basic knowledge of English phonetics.
