Years later, when a child asked her what made her decide to be a scientist instead of a tennis player, she laughed and said, “A bad forehand.”

She was making a joke. As you will see here, a forehand is a way of hitting the ball in tennis. One cannot have a hope of performing well in tennis if his/her forehand/backhand/volley are not good enough.
