Do you have any friends in California. I say:


I used to have a lot of friends there, but most of them have moved back to their home country.

VS

I used to have a lot of friends there, but most of them moved back to their home country.

What's the difference here? Are both okay?
 
They're both OK.

There's no effective difference: they're not there anymore.
 
Either of them.
 
Did they all come from the same country?
 
Then your sentences should end with "countries".
