These terms are from dancing. A twirl and a spin are very similar, but a twirl sounds feminine, and you do it on your feet.
The earth spins.
 
Spins and twirls both appear in rhythmic gymnastics, ice dancing and various forms of line dancing. That's why we asked for context.
