Direct and indirect Narration

Direct: The boy said to us, Father bought these toys for me.

Indirect: The boy said to us that father had bought those toys for him.

The boy said to us that his father had bought those toys for him.



Please suggest which one is the correct?

The second is better. In the first, we don't know whose father is being referred to. I prefer to begin: The boy told us that ...
