[Grammar] Difference between forgot and left

Please can you help me with this question and explain the grammatical rules that have been broken.

I'm afraid I forgot my homework at home

I think this should read
I'm afraid I left my homework at home

but I'm not sure why. What is the difference between using forgot and using left?

"I forgot" where my keys are is not the same as I left my keys at home. "I forgot" means that I could not remember. "I left" means that I neglected to bring something. I could say that, "I left all of the supplies at the base camp". This doesn't mean that I forgot the supplies, it merely means that I did not take them with me.

Agreed. In your sample sentence, "I forgot my homework at home" has the same meaning of "I (unintentionally) left my homework at home."

You can leave something by accident and that's nearly the same as forgetting.
You can leave something on purpose and that's not at all the same thing.
You can forget something exists or to do something, and that doesn't mean you left it anywhere.
