A client is challenging his therapist:

Client: So is it just a job to you, or do you care about your clients?

Therapist: I care. Did I give/Have I given you a different impression?

Let's say the client has been seeing the therapist for three weeks. Would 'did I give' or 'have I given' make more sense than the other? Or is this one of the examples where Americans prefer the 'did'-version and Brits the 'have'-version? Thank you.

I'm American and the "have" version seems more natural to me in this dialogue.

I'd use "Have I given ..." if I were talking about a general impression. I'd use "Did I give ..." if I were talking about one particular recent instance.
