Our washing machine has broken but my mum doesn't want to buy a new one. She said probably we will move to another apartment so it's not cost-effective to buy a new one. She won't bring the machine with us when we move. I've been washing my clothes by hand for a month. To me, washing bedsheets is the toughest job. Now, I acknowledge that washing machines are one of the greatest inventions.

Our washing machine has broken, but my mum doesn't want to buy a new one right now. She said we will probably move to a new apartment soon, so it wouldn't be cost-effective to buy a new one at this time. She won't bring the machine with us when we move. I've been washing my clothes by hand for a month. To me, washing bedsheets is the toughest job. Now, I acknowledge that the washing machine was one of the greatest inventions.
It seems more likely that she said it wouldn't be worth it at this time to buy a new one. (The term "cost effective" is not one most of us use although we understand it.)

I would say "Our washing machine has broken down".

Our washing machine broke. It stopped working properly. (It was leaking oil.)
