Does "cut loose with point-detonationa" mean "did a good job with point-detonation"?
 
No. See definition #1. The howitzer crews suddenly started firing as quickly as they could.

edit: Point detonation simply refers to the type of rounds being fired, which explode on point of impact, compared to proximity bursts which explode in the air above the target.
