Culture is not separate from language. Culture in language learning is the fifth basic skill. According to some linguists, culture dictates grammar, vocabulary, and metaphors. Just knowing the rules of a language is not sufficient if not necessary cultural knowledge is present. Learners must aim to understand the culture of natives to gain some insight into the native speakers' thought so they can deal with situation when the rules are undefined. Learners must know the similarities and differences between their own culture and the second/foreign language's culture. It is in the learners' best interest to realize that English registers they use are different when dealing with different people. (Exposing?) to second/foreign language's culture help learners understand obscure references.
