Here is the audio clip I'm talking about. Here's what I think I can hear:

"That's all it took me to sign [...], book is a book."

Thanks in advance for your help.

I hear (very indistinctly) That's all you told me to say, uh. A book's a book!

I hear this:

That's all he told me to say. He said, "A book's a book".

And I heard "That's all/S'all you/he told me to say. (little laugh) ... Book's a book."

If you could provide more context, it might perhaps become clearer.

Yeah, sure: a novelist is visiting a town and he meets a girl who read one of his novels, so they have a walk together. While doing so there is the following dialogue going on:

Novelist: When I started writing scripts I didn't envision myself filling half-priced bins in videostores either.
Girl: Oh well then, we have a lot in common. What movies, anything I've heard of?
Novelist: Yes, but nothing I'm going to admit to; I want you to like me.
Girl: I like you already.
Novelist: Oh that's good, I want to keep it that way.
Girl: I liked your book, too... the ending was, uh... dark...
Novelist: [Audio]

The problem for me is that the audio clip starts after the utterance begins.

Can you post the added context as an audio clip? Include the following couple of lines, too.

Alright then, if it could be useful you can find the full scene at this link. The audio is based on 30:59 of this video.
