What's the reason that we can't use 'surround' in this sentence instead of 'surrounding'? Put it other words, What's the delicate difference between surround and surrounding?

Cool! This street artist uses his surrounding to create art.
 
It should be 'surroundings'.

He uses things he sees in the street — such as a heart-shaped patch in the asphalt — to create a message.
 
From that picture alone, it would be difficult for me to differrentiate that from graffito/i.
