Human beings have been living on this Earth for thousands of years. With time, one generation came after another, and the cycle continues to this day. Our parents raised us, taught what is best for us. While people of our generation do have things in common with our parents’ generation, we still hold differences in our beliefs, values, and goals.

First, the understanding of religion of our and our parents’ generation differs. We are raised in Muslim families, but our generation is less connected to the religion. We may accept it, but most of us do not strictly follow its teachings. For example, we were taught that our religion forbade us to be extravagant. But most us will indulge in pomp and show on social media and in our circles to portray ourselves and lifestyles as enviable. Our parents, on the other hand, prefer to remain humble. For them, successes are a blessing from God and should be accepted with gratitude and humility.

Second, the way we develop values is different than our parents’ way. Our values have less religious influence; we form values from our surroundings. We keenly observe what behavior the media and our generation considers good. To be a better fit, we often form our values from their acceptable behaviors. Our parents are more focused towards religion and adopted values that are considered in the eyes of religion as preferable. For them, there is a possibility that the majority is not always right and one has to remain critical about external influences.

Lastly, we differ from each other on how we form our goals. Our generation is mostly self-centric. We think that we only live one time so we should focus on the goals that serve us the best. Most of us would be willing to leave our parents for better education and job opportunities; this is not the case with our parents. Our parents’ goals are family centric. They would forgo such career opportunities that would materially be beneficial, but they would have to move away from the family.

Most of us have been raised by our parents, but we have developed a different outlook towards beliefs, values, and goals. Our generation is liberal in beliefs; our values are shaped by society; and our goals are individualistic. On the other hand, our parents' generation are conservative; they shaped their values from religious teachings; and they form goals that benefits the family.
