Changes in how children are taught to syllabilize words?

Just wondering if there has been a change in how kids are taught to syllablize in English. For example, I remember being taught gar-den but now I very often hear syllables ending in a consonant rather than beginning with one - as in "gard-en". Is this a systematic change over time in teaching method or maybe just some regional difference I'm only now noticing?

I don't teach children and haven't heard this, but I have just looked the word up in a number of dictionaries and they all do it your way.
