Can "relative clause" be replaced with "dash"?

Can "relative clause" be replaced with "dash", or vice versa?

People may also distort their pasts because of a social desirability bias - a tendency to present oneself in a socially desirable light.

I've seen it often in specialized/technical texts and research papers.
 
Yes, it should be. So can I use a hyphen instead of "relative clause" to bring out additional information?
 
A dash is more abrupt and is meant for those clauses that really interrupt the flow of the sentence.
