calm down and think instead of burst into rage

Here is an extract from the article 'When an employee throws a temper tantrum' published in CBSMoneyWatch:
'I have tried to talk to the employee and ask that they quiet down and control themselves to no avail. What ways are available to win the employee over to play for the team and help them learn to calm down and think instead of burst into rage?'

I have always thought that after 'instead of' the verb takes the ing form, but in the above example after 'instead of' we have bare infinitive 'burst'. Why?

'...instead of bursting into rage' would be more natural.

It's more likely to be an editing issue that the proofreader missed than a grammatical one.
