Ive read the following sentence in a test:
"Paris, the businesswomen were told, was now a financial centre."
I cannot figure out the meaning of "the businesswomen were told".
Thanks.

It can be rephrased as: The businesswomen were told that Paris was now a financial centre.
 
Somebody told the businesswomen that Paris was now a financial centre.
