Is there a question? You seem to have a view of the meaning already. Some people do use it in this way. A lot of people in the UK don't. For us* it means 'provide for a family/"put food on the table"*...'

*Note: in this idiom, the food, the table, and the 'put'ter are all metaphorical. The person who 'brings home the bacon' may just get a monthly pay cheque.

* I don't mean 'we in the UK'; I know you are too. I mean 'those of us who talk like me in this respect'! I imagine you are young enough to have acquired a sense of the expression which we old folks would regard as 'American' - particularly as spoken by sports commentators. (This may sound like naked flattery, but it's my guess.)
