Have I made any mistakes? Is it correct to begin with "being woken up by..."

Being woken up by half a dozen police officers and then held pinned to the floor for a long time, was not an experience David wanted to repeat. It didn't help that the police apologized later on. He was treated as the worst criminal, although he had never committed any crime. David asked a chief inspector how it was possible that in the 21th century and the access to all kind of information, the police got the wrong address, but was told that mistakes happened all the time.

It should have been "in the 21st century."
