Which one is correct?

1. In the final year of high school, I participated in the competitive University Entrance Exam in my country and after being ranked in the top 5% among more than 50000 applicants, I was able choose my favorite field of study which was dentistry.

2. In the final year of high school, I participated in the competitive University Entrance Exam in my country and after ranking in the top 5% among more than 50000 applicants, I was able choose my favorite field of study which was dentistry.

But yet you ended up as an English teacher. Ah, life can be a cruel mistress.

My hunch is to go with the second one. Am I right?
