Is Raymond Murphy's Basic Grammar in Use a good book for learners whose English is at CEFR A2 level?

This is subjective of course, but personally I'm not a fan (sorry Ray). Having said that, it is the best-selling self-study grammar book in the world.

I do feel though, that an A2 learner would probably benefit more from the intermediate level edition, especially if that learner were Japanese.

I have gripes about a lot of English language learning books.
Do you think that ESL learners should learn English grammar through authentic English?

That's a big question that demands a lengthy answer. The extremely short answer is: not necessarily.

There are so many factors to consider, and ways for learners to be different, that it's not helpful to make such a generalisation, I think.
