Do my sentences sound natural?

As Tom was walking along the towpath, eating his sandwich and enjoying the cool breeze from the river, a gull swooped on him, almost brushing against him. It scared him because it flew in from nowhere. He instinctively held firmly his sandwich as more gulls swooped on him, screeching like mad. Tom ducked; a piece of bread lodged in his throat. He had to stop walking and coughed up.

This was his home town, but in his thirty years he had never experienced anything similar. He had read in the newspaper that something strange was happening to gulls, and Tom thought it must be related to the economic crises. They were probably hungry because people wasted less when money was becoming scarce. If the crises deepened, who knows how they were going to react, he thought. They would probably become desperate like people in a similar situation, and attack anybody with food in their hands. He imagined the battle between humans and birds, and it reminded him of a famous Hitchcock film. Tom hurried and didn't want to think of it because he had enough of his own worries. It could be soon his turn to lose his job.
