"As they were the better team, they won."
"As they were the better team, they've won."

Which one is correct to say?

I like the first version better, because the simple past tense in both clauses reflect each other.

I'd like the second one more if it were in the present: "As they are the better team, they've won."

Both share one problem: They imply that the better team always wins. And that's not always what happens. But that's not a grammar question, it's a logic question.

Both are grammatical and possible. The present perfect implies a recent or still relevant result (winning).
