Hello all

It is Arsenal versus Chelsea match.

My friend comes to my room to see the match and asks me which team is in the lead.

If the score is 1:1, 2:2 etc. can I respond this way?

Arsenal is tying with Chelsea now. It is 1:1.

I know there is that option to use "are tied" but I am curious about this one. How does it sound to you ?

Thank you!

 That‘s perfectly OK, but a bit wordy. I‘d just say ‘1-all‘.

I am so relieved. You can not imagine how much. One native speaker from America didn´t like it at all but could not explain it.

Just to be sure. This sentence wouldn´t sound good: "He finished second in both of his finals, which means he is tying with Oliver Millroy and Lee Bell on points"

One native speaker here on forum didn´t like my additional sentence. I believe him that it doesn´t sound that good however I would like to know your opinion on it as you liked my original sentence.

Thank you very much.

 Sounds OK to me, although I'm in my 60s - younger speakers might not be so accepting of that use of 'tying' - the expression 'level on points' would be more idiomatic. ;-)

Interesting. I thought it was more about the tense than about the word "tie/tying"

I'd say 'Arsenal are drawing one one with Chelsea' (though tying is OK, too).

During a football (AE soccer) match, only goals are relevant to the score. Points are only determined at the end of a league match.

That is the only reason why you may not say "tying" in this sentence? "He finished second in both of his finals, which means he is tying with Oliver Millroy and Lee Bell on points" Do I understand it right?

What sport have we moved onto now?

The sentence with tying on points comes from a poker site. I didn't realized it might play a role - sorry for that.

In AmE, we would use "is tied" rather than "is tying".

Sorry, not my game  . I was thinking of an event that involved several rounds with points added up at the end of the day - a decathlon, for example.
