When I was a kid our teacher used to put this at the end of our homework as a sign that everything was OK.
I have no idea what it's called in English though. Does anyone know?

I've never seen it used as a sign of approval. It looks very like the typesetter's mark meaning 'delete'.

It could simply be his signature.

I have never seen it used in English- could it be something particular to Dutch?

It reminds me very much of the 'H' former boss of mine, a German whose name began with that letter, used to scrawl on my expenses claims to signify his approval of my figures

What was his or her name? I'm betting it was an initial.
